So today I went to Sephora to pick up a few things…..  and I was so happy when they told me it was a VIB event, today only, where I saved 15% off everything!  Wooo HOoo!   So I did end up getting a few more things that I went there for,  but I am definitely happy with my haul today.   I never got any email about this (although the salesgirl assured me that at least 3 emails had gone out regarding it,  several other people in line said they didn’t receive any emails about it either).  So….  expect some more product reviews coming your way really soon!

Here is my Haul…..  did I mention I got a big bag of samples and an umbrella?!

Sephora Haul

My Sephora Haul

I love it when you go to buy something, and you get an extra bonus off!

My Beauty Booty Loot:

  • Phyto 9  Nourishing Day Cream with 9 Plans for Ultra-Dry Hair.  Post-winter hair is unhappy  🙁
  • Bumble and Bumble Mending Shampoo and Mending Conditioner.  Again,  post winter hair is unhappy.  Hopefully I can get a trim to get rid of the really damaged ends and this will take care of the rest of my hair!
  • Bliss Starter Set – Triple Oxygen.  Contains travel sizes of “Triple Oxygen Instant Energizing Cleansing Foam, Triple Oxygen Instant Energizing Mask (which I have ALWAYS wanted to try!), “Triple Oxygen Instant Energizing Eye Gel, and Triple Oxygen +C Energizing Cream.   Because my hair isn’t the only winter casualty…  my skin has taken a beating as well!
  • “The Original BeautyBlender” makeup sponge – I need to blend better
  • Josie Maran 100% Pure Argan Oil.  I hope this lives up to the hype,  I only got the small bottle (15 mL/.5 fl oz.)  But we will see if it seems to work….
  • Murad Acne Spot Treatment.  Just to have on hand.
  • Tarte Beauty and the Box – Amazonian clay eye shadow quad and Lights, Camera, Lashes! mini-mascara.  I will have no shortage of mascaras to review!  I also needed some brown everyday shadows.  These look a bit shimmery, but I think they’ll work!  and finally….
  • Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream in Fair.   I was torn between getting Fair and getting Light,  but I decided to go with Fair (the lighter one) and I can always get another one in Light come summer when my skin tans a bit.  I had wanted to try the Too Faced BB cream,  but they were all out of the light colours.  Trying the sample,  it did seem a bit shimmery though, so maybe the smashbox one is better to try first!

My samples packet contained:

Sephora Samples

Samples Packet

  • Sephora Full Action – Extreme Effect Mascara
  • Make Up For Ever Smoky Lash – Extra Black Mascara
  • Bumble and Bumble Thickening Shampoo and Thickening Conditioner samples
  • Perfume Sample – Viva La Juicy
  • Perfume Sample – BCBGMAXAZRIA
  • Givenchy Mister Light – Instant Light Corrective Pen sample.  This one is on since it says it is a pen,  the picture is of a pen,  except it is in a little packet.  Weird  🙂
I love Stuff

When I checked my email later that night,  I HAD received an email from Sephora regarding their “Chic Week” from March 30 – April 5.  Weird, since when I was in the store they said it was a “Today Only!” type of thing.  But whatever  🙂  Maybe VIB’s got an advanced day before regular Beauty Insiders did?

Did you get to participate in the “Chic Week” event?  What did you get???

Spider Lashes…Yay or Nay?

Jan

For as long as I can remember,  one of my biggest pet peeves is SPIDER LASHES!  I hate it when other girls have them, and I go to painstaking costs to use a lash-comb and non-clumping mascara.  I prefer the look of long, fluttery, feathery lashes.  I want every lash to be defined.

So I was a little bewildered when this past fall, spider lashes became a major trend.  Some put the blame on Kim Kardashian.  And while her lashes are very long and fake looking….  they lack the ‘clumpiness’ that really defines Spider Lashes.  And now Allure Magazine (tagline: The Beauty Expert) is joining the bandwagon.  In their January 2012 issue, there is an article called “Magnifying Lash” (pg.76) featuring 3 lash looks to covet, one of them being, spider lashes! From the article: “…The look has even evolved to include clumpy spider lashes, popularized by [Pat] McGrath when she chunked them up at the fall 2011 Gucci and Lanvin shows.  “The look is so extreme- and there’s great beauty in that,” she says.”.  The article also says that they were “Once a sign of bad taste or technique”. I think that for most every day looks, they are! After all, covergirl Roony Mara seems to be rocking gorgeously clump-free lashes.

The wikipicks blog had this picture in their “Worst Trends of 2011” post, with the caption:

“The clumpy top and bottom eyelashes that result from a zillion coats of mascara made a dramatic appearance on celebs like Kim Kardashian and Nicki Minaj. The downside is “lumpy, messy mascara that takes double the time to take off that it did to put on. It’s a nightmare,” says “X Factor USA” style team member Kristofer Buckle. Chanel makeup artist Rachel Goodwin, who works with Lea Michele and Emma Stone, says spider lashes took off because of the overuse of magic-grow eyelash formulas. “Woman had more lashes than they knew what to do with. It looked like they had creatures on their eyes.”.”

This look might be okay for going out, or for rocking a 60’s Twiggy look.

Bottom of the Jar Beauty Tips

Jan

Show:  Rachael Ray
Episode:  Trash or Treasure
Date:  January 12, 2012
Guest:  Jenn Falik

On this episode, beauty and style expert Jenn Falik was on to show cost saving tips to repurpose those straggling little bits of makeup you have left (eyeshadow, mascara and bronzer).   I have to say,  I never have this problem.  I tend to buy way too many products and usually have to throw stuff out after using like a third of it. (I am working on this and have totally cut my cosmetics budget!).  So Jenn’s advice is to try and do something different instead of throwing that little bit of makeup out.  MY advice is to skip the first two tips, but try the bronzer one if you actually do have a little bit of bronzer remaining!

Eye Shadow into Nail Polish

So you just use a spoon to scrape out that last little bit of shadow from the palette onto a plate (and muddle it a bit to get it all powdery).  Next, pour some clear nail polish into the powder and mix together using an OLD makeup brush (or a toothpick/old clean popsicle stick).  You can increase or decrease the amount of powder to adjust the lightness of your new nail polish colour.  I don’t really see the point in this, since you have to go out and buy the clear polish.  You also don’t know what the result is AND you are going to gum up the brush or at least ‘taint’ it with a different colour, unless you keep in the same colour family!  Rachael also says don’t do a statement nail.  I love statement nails!   Do it if you want   🙂

Mascara into Eyeliner

So if you are getting to the bottom of your mascara and there’s not enough for the wand to reach, take a pointy Q-tip to get any last bits that you can use for another purpose, a brand new eyeliner.  Not a very precise one.  Also, Jenn notes  as a general rule you should replace your mascara entirely every three months because after that it starts to accumulate bacteria from your eyes.  Even when I use mascara every day,  I never get to the end of my mascara.  Another tip I don’t see the point in, since the Q-tip application seems messy (and I don’t even get close to finishing my mascara, and I am a bad, bad girl who replaces it every 6 months). I also use Blinc Mascara, so I don’t know how well this would work since it is formulated to wrap around lashes.

Powder Bronzer to Custom Bronzing Lotions

I like this idea because if you’ve used almost all of your have bronzing powder, it is obviously a colour you like and that suits you.  One caveat though,  you may like a shimmery or a matte bronzer on your face, but not on your body (and vice-versa).  So scrape out any remaining powder bronzer from the compact into a small glass dish. Then you just add your choice of body lotion, and mix it up to create a custom bronzing lotion.  Remember that this is customizable so,  you can always add other stuff.  Like if your bronzer is matte, you can add some shimmery copper or gold eyeshadow shavings (like the nail polish tip) to create the perfect bronzing lotion for you. My favourite bronzers are Park Avenue Princess by Tarte for shimmer and Hoola by Benefit for matte.
