Whiter Teeth and Fresher Skin & Nails for Fall

Sep

Show: The Today Show

Segment: Bobbie’s Buzz

Date: September 14, 2012

Theme: Freshen Up for Fall

On this episode, Bobbie shares affordable ways to exfoliate skin, freshen up manicures and whiten your teeth in preparation for Fall (My Favourite Season!).

The first item she shows is Le Edge Full Body Exfoliator. This looks like those plastic razors you sometimes get with depilatory creams. It is a stainless steel  tool.  It kind of looks like fun, but I wonder how well it would work? And for how long? (Available in Pink and Blue). The product webpage says:

Le Edge is a hygienic personal exfoliating tool. Le Edge is precision designed to remove with ease dead skin cells and debris from the skin’s surface, revealing the newer younger cells and more radiant skin. Le Edge removes dulling surface debris such as toxins, oil, dirt, pollutants and dead skin cells. This process helps to restore the skin texture and by doing so, helps to reduce the size of the skin’s pores naturally.

The next item was for all those new gel manicures. Because you can’t just take the polish off (you’ll be removing part of your nail!), you need Red Carpet Manicure Erase Gel Nail Polish Remover.  Actually Bobbie showed a kit with a buffer, orange sticks, and I guess some remover pads;  but you really just need this!

Finally, for those darker lipstick colours (hooray for plums and crimsons!), Supersmile Quikee Instant Tooth Whitening. Bobbie says this is what Cameron Diaz and Jennifer Lopez use when they wear bright lip colours. She says it will keep teeth whiter and remove any film, so you can get away with wearing that bolder lip for fall.

Bobbi Brown – Foundation Fixes for Spring

Apr

Makeup artist Bobbi Brown was on the Today show today to give some tricks and tips on the perfect foundation.  Bobbi says it is the simplest thing when you get it right, and the trick is it needs to match your face, your neck, your hands; it just has to be the right tone.   My mother has this problem finding foundation, as her neck is a different colour from her face.

Her number one tip for buying foundation is getting the proper colour.  You need to get the one that blends into the side of your face. (Don’t use your hand – wow, I am so guilt of this sometimes!).  Try to look in natural light,  and try a yellow-based foundation.  Yellow foundations get rid of redness, and it is tones we already have in our skin.  Second tip is choose the right formula.  She also loves tinted moisturizers,  they are sheer and great for weekends.  You need to adjust your foundation for spring, as your skin gets dryer or oilier.  You can also adjust the formula by adjusting the moisturizer you wear underneath.

Dark Spots

The first model had some dark spots,  so Bobbi suggested putting foundation on first, taking a touch up stick (not a concealer, because concealer is lighter than your skin, Bobbi applied this with a brush), go wherever there is a spot, let it sit and use powder on top to lock it in place.  Bobbi says if you have dry skin, you can still use a mineral-based powder foundation.

Redness

The trick is to use a yellow tone foundation.  Apply all over.  Use a yellow powder.  A translucent powder could cause ashiness.  By using a good moisturizer underneath, you can still get a great dewy look, even when using powder.  She also used a a cream blush on her cheeks, as well as a bronzing powder all over with a big brush, including a little on the neck.

Bobbi’s Tips:

Never apply foundation on the neck.
Avoid over applying to cover dark spots.
Apply foundation with fingers, sponge or brush.  A brush will give you more coverage.
Reduce redness with a tinter moisturizer.
You can also correct redness with bronzer.
Avoid using a product that is too dense.

Eucerin Dermatologist on Dr. Oz

Mar

On the March 1st episode of Dr. Oz – “Dr. Oz goes Head to Head with the Men who Hate Him” (funny title!) – Eucerin dermatologist Rosemarie Ingleton was on to talk about dry skin.  (you can head over to EucerinUS.com to get US coupons).  Its winter and people (including me!) are starting to feel the effects of dry, heated air. Also, the older you get, the more issues you have with dry skin.

She said that dry skin goes beyond just comfort, that it can become a health issue.  If yours is so itchy that you start scratching, you can open your skin up to all sorts of bacteria, viruses and fungi (Ummm  Yuck?!).  So according to her the three biggest reasons you get dry itchy skin are:

1. Your Morning Routine

Most people take too hot and too long of a shower.   It just irritates your skin and removes its natural oils.  I know I am totally guilty of this.  Also,  many women are applying anti-aging products like retinols and retinoids that prevent wrinkles, but at the same time irritate and dry out skin.  Also,  some soaps may be no good.  It doesn’t protect oils, just removes dirt.  The fragrances and dyes some contain are no good either.

2. Genetic Reasons

Some people may be genetically predisposed to certain dry skin conditions, such as eczema and psoriasis.  These can be causes of red patches and scaly skin.

3. Weather

Heating and air conditioned air suck moisture from skin.  It is usually less humid in winter as well.

Her suggestions for helping skin:

  1. Eat salmon.  It has fatty acids and oils in it to nourish skin.
  2. Eat bran.  It is rich in zinc which repairs skin cells.
  3. Use a humidifier.  It will put moisture back into the air. You can try one like the Air-O-Swiss Travel Ultrasonic Humidifier.
  4. Use a timer to remind you to keep your showers short.  She suggested 5 minutes.  I say that is impossible!  But maybe you can do it.   She brought a timer from Eucerin.
  5. She also suggested trying Eucerin Calming Body Wash Daily Shower Oil and Eucerin Calming Creme Daily Moistuizer.  I use these myself, and they are great!
