Spider Lashes…Yay or Nay?

Jan

For as long as I can remember,  one of my biggest pet peeves is SPIDER LASHES!  I hate it when other girls have them, and I go to painstaking costs to use a lash-comb and non-clumping mascara.  I prefer the look of long, fluttery, feathery lashes.  I want every lash to be defined.

So I was a little bewildered when this past fall, spider lashes became a major trend.  Some put the blame on Kim Kardashian.  And while her lashes are very long and fake looking….  they lack the ‘clumpiness’ that really defines Spider Lashes.  And now Allure Magazine (tagline: The Beauty Expert) is joining the bandwagon.  In their January 2012 issue, there is an article called “Magnifying Lash” (pg.76) featuring 3 lash looks to covet, one of them being, spider lashes! From the article: “…The look has even evolved to include clumpy spider lashes, popularized by [Pat] McGrath when she chunked them up at the fall 2011 Gucci and Lanvin shows.  “The look is so extreme- and there’s great beauty in that,” she says.”.  The article also says that they were “Once a sign of bad taste or technique”. I think that for most every day looks, they are! After all, covergirl Roony Mara seems to be rocking gorgeously clump-free lashes.

The wikipicks blog had this picture in their “Worst Trends of 2011” post, with the caption:

“The clumpy top and bottom eyelashes that result from a zillion coats of mascara made a dramatic appearance on celebs like Kim Kardashian and Nicki Minaj. The downside is “lumpy, messy mascara that takes double the time to take off that it did to put on. It’s a nightmare,” says “X Factor USA” style team member Kristofer Buckle. Chanel makeup artist Rachel Goodwin, who works with Lea Michele and Emma Stone, says spider lashes took off because of the overuse of magic-grow eyelash formulas. “Woman had more lashes than they knew what to do with. It looked like they had creatures on their eyes.”.”

This look might be okay for going out, or for rocking a 60’s Twiggy look.

“Salma Hayek’s Beauty School”

Jan

Beauty Tips from Salma Hayek!

So way back in September, Salma Hayek was on the Rachael Ray show discussing her new product line Nuance Salma Hayek (she’s been working on it for 10 years!).  Apparently her grandmother was into beauty recipes and knew about exotic plants from Mexico, so she wanted to share hew wealth of beauty knowledge with other women.  One of the main ingedients is called tepezcohuite, and it is used in Mexico and South America to regenerate burn victims’ skin.   Its a full product line (from shampoos to lotions to makeup).  She claims her products can get rid of dark circles and wrinkles.  Of course, everyone likes the “pod” packaging of her lipsticks and eye shadows.  They are all less than $20, but available exclusively at CVS,  unfortunately there isn’t one near me!

So after discussing her products, Salma answered audience members beauty questions!  So Salma made the following recommendations:

Dark Circles

Use her Cooling Eye Gel with Green Tea in the morning to help depuff and remove shadows.  Then use the Nuance Wrinkle Filler to tone and tighten (as a temporary fix).  She suggested using an orange concealer (or colour corrector) instead of a lighter concealer to counteract the blue in dark circles (from your veins).  Tap it on, don’t rub!

The Right Blush for Fair Skin

Use tinted moisturizer to  look darker without looking made up.  She suggested matching the blush to the colour of your inner mouth for a natural look.

Fuller Looking Lips

Use a lip liner in the same colour as your lipstick, which should be close to your natural colour.  Take a contour cream and put a tiny amount just under your lip to give depth and bring your bottom lip forward (A New Tip to me – I love learning something new!).  Put a highlighting colour just around the curves of your top lip and top with shimmery gloss.
